How long did that take? It was easy right?

I was asked this question the other day... when doing a simple fondant covered cake for a friends baby shower.

The answer...Nope...

See, before the cake looks all pretty and covered... there is alot that goes into it.

First, baking the cakes- it's not as easy as it seems. The cakes need to have the right consistency. Why? Too moist and they'll fall appart!

Cakes must cool COMPLETELY before the next step...

Then, the butter cream. There are different variations of buttercream and you ave to make sure not to over mix. What will happen with over mixing? Bubbles. Bubbles cause lumpy fondant!

Okay so, we make the buttercream... then what? Dirty ice! It allows all the crumbs to be trapped in. So, then we place the cake back into the fridge. Once that was nice and hard, we can now layer the cake with a good layer of buttercream.

The amount and thickness is important.

So between this, you then have to make sure the fondant is made....

Melt the marshmallows...add the powdered sugar and mix...

But it's not done there!

The right consistency is a ball that does not stick to your palm when rolled. It must combine but also be able to make a nice round ball.

Color? Well... adding the right amount means mixing 4 lbs of fondant...by hand!

Okay so, say you did the fondant ahead of time and now, you have to roll it out, place it over the cake and smooth it out...

Now, mix that with decorations and I'm looking at 8-10 hours PER CAKE!

Yup... long time right?

So next time you see a "simple" cake on the web, take a closer look!

Love and Sprinkles!
